For years, Create React App (CRA) under the hood with Webpack was the gold standard for spinning up a new React project. It abstracted away the complex configuration and let developers focus on writing code. But as web applications grew larger and more complex, a significant pain point emerged: performance. Not the performance of the app itself, but the performance of the developer experience.

Enter Vite: The Next Generation Frontend Tooling

Vite (French for “fast”) flips the traditional model on its head. Instead of bundling everything upfront, Vite leverages native ES modules provided by modern browsers.

Here is the magic:

  1. Instant Server Start: Vite categorizes your code into dependencies (which rarely change) and source code (which you edit often). It pre-bundles dependencies using esbuild (which is incredibly fast, written in Go), and serves source code over native ESM.
  2. Lightning Fast HMR: When you edit a file, Vite only needs to precisely invalidate the chain between the edited module and its closest HMR boundary. The browser then requests only the updated module. The result? HMR updates are consistently fast, regardless of the size of the application. The update is almost instantaneous.

Our Migration Experience

Migrating an enterprise-level React application from CRA to Vite sounded daunting, but the process was surprisingly smooth. The Vite team provides a clear migration path.

The immediate impact was staggering. Our cold start times dropped from over 30 seconds to under 2 seconds. HMR became instantaneous. The sheer joy returned to the development process.
