Content optimisation or content maintenance helps make your content up-to-date, more complete and optimised for SEO. At Paretoid, we’ve used this exact workflow to produce not just tens of thousands of additional traffic, but also:

  • better visibility on search engines
  • boosted ranking for multiple related keywords
  • increased audience engagement
  • more visitors to leads
  • improved user experience

In this post, we’ll show you our process of doing it step-by-step:

1. Load up the document in a content optimisation tool

There are plenty of keyword optimisation tools available in the market like Surfer SEO and Neuron Writer. At Paretoid, we only use Frase.io for keyword optimisation.

2. Intent and title optimisation

  • Does the topic precisely define the content written? OR Is the topic specific enough to be covered in an article?

Tell what the article is about in a few words.

  • Have you covered all the sub-topics?

Do competitor analysis and ensure that you’ve covered all the closely related sub-topics. Tools like keywordtool.io can give you ideas on what to cover.

  • Clarify article title

For clearer article titles, provide context when keywords are ambiguous or confusing. Expanding the context and offering additional information helps readers understand the topic and avoid misunderstandings.

  • Add year in title if relevant

If the topic is constantly developing, add the year when it was last updated. And update it every year.

3. Optimise meta description

The meta description is like a mini-summary of the article. Mention the primary topics (macro-context) covered in the article. No need to write full sentences. (Keep in mind that this is not a ranking factor)

4. Bring up the score to 100%

Our goal with content optimisation is to cover as many related keywords as possible without losing sight of the keyword intent.

5. Introduction section

  • Written a brief introduction to set the context for this article.

Mention all the sub-concepts (sub-headings) that will be covered in this article. The primary aim of this section is to make the visitor continue reading the article or navigate to the section that interests them.

6. Body section:

  • Are the subtopics complete?

Write the subheading as a complete phrase or sentence. Write them as questions if possible.

  • Added relevant data points from personal experience, case studies, research studies and public statistics?
  • Can data be presented in a table?
  • Can you convert a paragraph into a list?
  • Have you added graphics to clarify the concepts (optional)
  • Have you added links to other related articles?

7. FAQ section

Go to AnswerSocrates.com or Answerthepublic.com to fetch 5-6 questions closely related to the topic (you’ve not already covered in the article).

7. Proofread with ProWritingAid or Grammarly

  • Does each paragraph cover ONLY one main idea?

Split longer paragraphs into multiple brief paragraphs. Ensure that there are only three short sentences in a paragraph. And make long sentences short.

ProWritingAid has a free Google Docs extension, which can help optimise your content.
